The goal of the Sports and Competition department is to host an athlete centered, world-class athletic event, showcasing the athletic skills and achievements of athletes with intellectual disabilities, leaving them, their families, friends and fans with a lasting and memorable experience of the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games.

The 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games will feature competition in seven sports incuding:

• Alpine Skiing
• Cross-Country Skiing
• Figure Skating
• Floor Hockey
• Snowboarding
• Snowshoeing
• Speedskating
