Language Services involves the following two (2) areas:

1)  Interpretation – This is the process of establishing either oral or gestural communications between two or more speakers who cannot use the same language. Interpretation takes two (2) main forms:

• Simultaneous Interpretation – Simultaneous interpretation occurs while the source language speaker speaks. The interpreter formulates the spoken message into the target language as quickly as possible. This service is typically offered at the Head of Delegation (“HOD”) Meeting, a daily meeting where issues are raised by HODs and information is communicated by the GOC.
• Consecutive Interpretation – In Consecutive Interpretation, the interpreter speaks after the source-language speaker has finished speaking, either entirely or in sections. This service is typically offered by a full-time Delegation Assistant Liaison (“DAL”), who is assigned to each Delegation and who must be fluent in the Delegation’s language.

 2)  Translation – This is the process of determining the meaning of a written text in one language ("source text") and producing, in another language, an equivalent text ("target text" or "translation") that communicates the same meaning. For the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games, document Translation must be offered (if needed) in:

• Arabic
• French
• Mandarin Chinese
• Russian
• Spanish

Additionally, Translation must be offered into Braille for the vision-impaired.
